| It is not necessary to copyright an original creation, the copyright attaches at the moment of creation. Thus, it was unecessary for Nissan to copyright anything. The original code was copyrighted the moment it was written. The fact that it was copyrighted does not make it illegal for you to access and view the code on an ECU you purchased (if this were true, then you could not read any book you buy). What it does do is prevent you from copying the code and then selling it. It also limits the extent to which you can copy the code for your own use. Whether you can create and distribute a modified version of the code without permission is a good question. Copyrights usually extend to derivitive works. For example, I cannot write a story using some other authors charaters (except for parodies of an existing work). You cannot right a song using someone elses tune and different words, etc. Ultimately, only the courts can say and that will only happen if someone decides to push it.
